Keep having these arguments with designy/fashiony types. They say that there’s no point reading fiction, and that I’m wasting my time reading so much of it. Basically, their point is that it has no cultural currency i.e. there’s no way to ‘wear’ or ‘adopt’ fiction directly, and all you can do with it, in that sense, is impress people with your knowledge of the Western canon.
